Horse Shelter Options: Comparing Field Shelters vs Stable Sheds
If you’re a Queensland horse owner, you already know our climate throws everything at our animals. And looking after your horses properly means giving them shelter that supports their natural behaviour whilst protecting them from that tough Queensland weather.
Every horse owner wants to do right by their animals, but working out whether a field shelter or traditional stable suits your situation better can feel overwhelming, but it depends on a number of factors – such as your horse management approach, property setup, and Queensland’s climate.
Field shelters (open-air paddock shelter for horses) offer natural ventilation, lower costs, and align with horses’ natural behaviour, making them ideal for most Queensland properties. Traditional stables provide individual horse containment and feeding control but cost significantly more to build and maintain. For leisure horses, breeding operations, and most hobby farms, field shelters deliver better welfare outcomes at a fraction of the cost.
At QLD Shade Sheds, we’ve spent over a decade helping horse owners across Queensland with horses and livestock shelter solutions. Here’s what you need to know to make the right choice for your horses and your property.
What are paddock shelters for horses?
Field shelters or paddock shelters are open-air structures positioned in paddocks, allowing horses to move freely in and out for weather protection. The basic design features a roof and typically three sides, with the open side positioned away from prevailing weather.
This configuration protects from sun, rain, and wind whilst ensuring excellent airflow. Horses are able to enter and exit as they choose, using the shelter when weather demands it and grazing normally when conditions are pleasant. Most field shelters can accommodate multiple horses, with sizing based on your specific horse numbers and individual space requirements.
Field shelters work particularly well in Queensland’s climate. Our intense summer heat makes shade more valuable than enclosed protection, whilst our mild winters rarely require the warmth that stables provide. The open design prevents moisture buildup, keeping the air fresh and your horses comfortable.
And as a plus, field shelters can be either fixed or relocatable depending on your choice of hold downs. Our ground anchors (which are suitable for shelters up to 5.9m wide) allow you to move them according to weather conditions, drainage, or to let grass recover, though proper planning is essential for any move.
Traditional stable considerations
Traditional stables are made up of individual boxes or stalls, so horses can be contained when they need to be, with controlled feeding, bedding, and individual monitoring.
Stables suit specific situations, for example, show horses that need individual feeding programs, horses requiring medical treatment or separation, and breeding operations managing mares foaling. However, a stable is a significant investment compared to field shelters, as each stall includes solid walls, doors, windows, flooring, and often electricity.
Field shelters by comparison cost a fraction of traditional stable construction, with no need for the doors, windows, flooring, or extensive groundwork needed for traditional stables. And, maintenance is minimal compared to the daily management and mucking out that stables require.
Maintenance note: Field shelters still need regular attention and should be mucked out frequently, though less intensively than traditional stables.

When each option works best
Queensland’s tough as nails climate and traditional stabling don’t always mix well. Enclosed spaces trap heat in summer, and without adequate ventilation, humidity, dust, and ammonia build up quickly, creating conditions that can seriously affect your horses’ long-term health.
And when it comes to health, horses need free time to support both their physical and mental wellbeing, with continuous confinement causing stress, boredom, and potentially dangerous behaviours. They love to roam and graze continuously, as they can maintain social structures within herds, reduce stress-related behaviours like box walking or weaving, and allow continuous movement to support their digestive and respiratory health. Field shelters are a great option to support this natural behaviour.
Also, Queensland’s climate suits field shelters particularly well. Our wind regions mean structures need proper engineering, but open designs like our field shelters handle wind better than enclosed buildings. Our summer heat makes shade essential, whilst our mild winters rarely require enclosed warmth.
When each option works best
Field shelters
Field shelters work brilliantly for leisure horses living out full-time, breeding operations managing mares and foals in paddocks, hobby farms with small numbers of horses, and properties prioritising natural horse management.
One of our Queensland customers manages miniature ponies on her property and purchased two field shelters to accommodate her herd. She shared her experience with us:
“We are delighted with our two shelters from QLD Shade Sheds. They were very easy to work with and the customer service was second to none. We were kept informed about the delivery times over the Christmas holidays. The shelters look fantastic and provide a great place for our horses to rest in all conditions. The height allows enough airflow to help keep them cool even on very hot days. We received great advice from Kathryn and were able to customise the shelters to suit our property. We would highly recommend QLD Shade Sheds to anyone looking for a high quality shade shed and great customer service.”
This experience demonstrates how field shelters can be customised to suit different horse types and property configurations whilst delivering the natural ventilation and weather protection that Queensland horses need.
Traditional stables
Traditional stables suit competition horses needing controlled programs, horses requiring individual medical management or dietary control, and situations where individual containment is necessary.
Many successful Queensland properties use a hybrid approach, providing field shelters for everyday protection and social living, with limited stable facilities available when individual horse management becomes necessary.
