Why Wind Region Ratings Matter?

Australia is divided into four wind regions based on the different types of windstorms that are typical to that area.  A structure with Wind Region Rating has been engineered to withstand the wind loads of that area as set out under the Australian Standards AS/NZS 1170:2:2002.

  • Wind Region A includes the southern coastal and inland areas of Australia and have an Ultimate Design Wind speed of up to 147.6km per hour.
  • Wind Region B includes the northern coastal areas of Australia that are not prone to cyclones and have an Ultimate Design Wind speed of up to 186.84km per hour.
  • Wind Region C includes the Tropical Cyclone prone regions of northern coastal Australia and have an Ultimate Design Wind speed of up to 232.2km per hour.
  • Wind Region D is the only part of Australia that is Severe Tropical Cyclone prone and have an Ultimate Design Wind speed of up to 316.8km per hour.
